Savory Ham and Cheese Scones

Sharing these Savory Ham and Cheese Scones has been on my “to do” list for a while. So, I’m happy to finally be getting them up on the blog for you all. If you’ve been around M and K for some time now, you know how much we love our scones. We’ve got our favorite Lemon Blueberry scones, our Pumpkin Chocolate Chip scones and more. But up until now, we have only shared sweet scones. But these savory ham and cheese scones with green onion are SO SO good.

When I made them for the photo shoot, I think Katie and I ate half of them. In our defense, it was our lunch… but seriously so good! Now, I know I’ve been over this a few times, but let’s talk about the ingredients quickly. I honestly haven’t had a ton of success with swapping flours out. I tried making them nut free, and using all purpose gluten free flour, but they were a little too dry! So if you’re going to try to sub something, you’ll have to play around.

Gluten free baking

After some time with gluten free and grain free baking, I truly think that almond flour and arrowroot are going to be your best options! They give the best texture and consistency in my opinion. We’ve gotten a lot of questions about arrowroot. I haven’t subbed it out, but I think you could also use corn starch, tapioca powder, or even just try regular flour here! Again, I can’t promise anything because I haven’t tried enough times to perfect!

If you’re looking for arrowroot, I love the Bob’s Red Mill kind that you can find at most grocery stores, but I order this beast on Amazon months ago, and I’m still using it! I loved how big it is and I think the price is actually really good. It’s $15 for a 4 lb. bag!

Savory or Sweet?

Ok friends, that’s it! After trying these, I’m curious if you’re on team savory or sweet when it comes to scones! I love both and I think it just depends on my mood. Anyways, here is the recipe!!

Course Appetizer, Breakfast
Cuisine American
Servings 16 scones

Equipment

  • food processor (optional)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups almond flour
  • 1 cup arrowroot
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 stick butter (cut into cubes/smaller pieces)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup diced ham
  • 2 Tbsp chopped green onion
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a food processor, combine the almond flour, arrowroot, baking soda, garlic powder, and salt. Pulse a few times to combine.
  • Next, add in the chunks of butter and pulse until they are pea size or smaller.
  • Add in the egg and again, pulse to combine. Pulse until dough is sticky.
  • Mix in ham, green onion, and cheese by hand.
  • Line a pan with parchment paper.
  • Split dough in half and for two rounds. If it's too sticky to work with, you can coat your hands and the parchment paper/surface you're working on with arrowroot.
  • Using your hands, for the dough into two discs, pressing them down until they are about 3/4-1 in. thick!
  • Using a pizza cutter, cut each round into 8 pieces.
  • Bake for about 20 minutes, pull them out, recut, and pull apart.
  • Bake for another couple of minutes or until golden brown and enjoy!
