Family Scavenger Hunt

In the summer, we spend a week with our family of fifteen at a cabin up north! Since the weather didn’t cooperate as we had hoped this year, I decided to create a Family Scavenger Hunt as an activity for the colder temperatures. It ended up being a highlight of our trip and so many fun memories were made! Also, if you are planning a trip with a lot of people, check out our meal ideas blog post to help with your planning.

Family Scavenger Hunt

While planning for our trip and looking for other activities, I remembered that we did something similar in high school with my soccer team and later for a friend’s birthday party! It was so much fun and I thought our family would have a blast – which they did!!

Here is how you plan and play family scavenger hunt!

1. Create a list of challenges, assigning different point values to each one.  I’m attaching what we did, but you’ll need to make it specific to your family or location. We also stipulated that none of the challenges could be completed at the cabin!

2. Divide your family into teams! We split up spouses and then had an even number of adults and kids. We had 3 teams of 5.

3. We allotted 90 minutes for the activity and required everyone to be back by 8:30. Teams would lose 1 point for every minute they were late.

4.  All teams left at the same time with their list and a pen. The goal was to either take a photo of the completed challenge or bring an item back. We limited phone use to the camera and maps/GPS.

5.  Once back, we reviewed the challenge list. Each team had to show their photo and get approval from the other two teams to get the points.

We created a PDF you can download for ideas for your scavenger hunt. You can access it here:

We didn’t have a prize for the winning team, but it would be fun to have a fun prize or something for the Family Scavenger Hunt winners. Check out our Amazon Storefront for ideas. It was such a good time and we are all still talking about it! We will absolutely be making this a family tradition!!
