Madison is a great city, but one of the reasons it’s a great place to live and visit are the surrounding towns that provide a unique experience outside of the city limits. If you’re craving a mix of scenic trails, small-town charm, and easy outdoor adventures, we’ve put together our favorite communities just outside Madison deliver in all the right ways. From rolling prairie paths to lakeside strolls and artsy escapes, here’s how to spend time exploring:
Middleton/ Cross Plains
Ancho & Agave
Located in Greenway Station – Ancho & Agave is a great spot for tacos and margs! Spend some time shopping and then stop in for lunch, dinner, or their chips and salsa – they are my favorite!
Crossroads Coffeehouse
This is my favorite coffee spot in the area. Grab a coffee (the lattes are my favorite!) and walk the boardwalk/trail just behind the coffeeshop!

National Mustard Museum
It’s free and a must stop in Downtown Middleton. The National Mustard Museum is one of a kind! It contains the world’s largest collection of, you guessed it, Mustard! Looking for some unique gifts or special condiments? This is your place!
Novanta Pizza
Novanta is borderine Middleton/Madison, but right off the beltline and I argue the BEST pizza in Madison. Katie loves Pizza Bruta (also good!!) but Novanta will always be my favorite. They don’t say they have it on the menu, but if you’re gluten free.. this is the BEST gf pizza you’ll ever have.
Pheasant Branch Conservancy
Pheasant Branch Conservancy is home to hiking and biking trails, protected prairie land, bubbling freshwater springs, and Native American effigy mounds. I love taking my kids here to run around and walk in the freshwater springs!
Poppy Home and Gift (& Tradition Market)
Located right downtown Middleton, Poppy and Tradition Market are two of my favorite shops! Poppy has the cutest assortment of home items and makes the perfect spot to stop and grab a gift. Tradition carries high-end, beautiful children’s clothing and gifts. My girls are too old now, but again, one of my favorite stops when I find out friend’s are having babies!
Villa Dolce
This quaint spot in the heart of Middleton has some great Italian food! We love their pizza, salads, and pasta dishes! I also love that Villa Dolce has gluten free pasta!
Wollersheim Winery & Distillery
It’s a little outside of Middleton/Cross Plains, but worth the trip! A beautiful winery and distillery, Wollersheim is a necessary stop on a nice day. The most beautiful scenery that definitely does not feel like you’re in Wisconsin.

In the summer, Grand Crossing transforms into a large open grass space & hosts live music, trivia night, yoga classes and “scoops & stories” for the littles. Grab coffee nearby from True Coffee, an ice cream from Below Deck or a cocktail from Buck & Honeys or the Breakwater.

The Muskellounge and Sporting Club, affectionately known to locals as “the Musky”, serves beer, cocktails (get a slushie!), wine, and some bar snacks. They have a variety of bar & board games, and a traditional shuffleboard setup! When you get hungry, grab a burger from Hanks! Its next door and the spaces are connected.
Waypoint Public House
Waypoint is a go-to for casual lakeside dining with a modern pub vibe. It’s especially good for lunch or a laid-back dinner after biking the loop. Lindsey’s family enjoys eating here in the summer, there’s a large deck out back overlooking the Yahara & you can even park your boat here!
Winnequah Park
Winnequah Park aka Dream Park is the heart of Monona’s outdoor scene. With wide open green space, a playground, a lagoon, and walking paths, it’s ideal for families or a slow afternoon outside. Bring a blanket, pack snacks, and stay awhile. My kids absolutely love this park! There are concerts on Tuesday evenings in the summer with rotating local grass bands.
Mt. Horeb
Known as the “Troll Capital of the World,” Mount Horeb blends quirky charm with some of the best biking and hiking access in the region.
Brix Cider
If you’re into cider and good food, Brix, located right downtown is a must! It’s just off the biking trail too if you want to bike into town. They have a variety of ciders and food, made with local ingredients! They have great outdoor seating and often have live music!
